PVC single-ply membrane roof system for warm roof constructions that requires no adhesives or fasteners - just the power of the wind.
The Protan Vacuum System uses one-way air vents to suck the air out of the space between the Protan membrane and the substrate. This creates a vacuum within the space, which sucks the Protan membrane down to the substrate and holds it in place without the need for mechanical fixings or adhesives. The system is suitable for both new-build and refurbishment projects. The roof substrate and the membrane’s perimeter fasteners must be airtight. In order to assess the suitability of a particular building, it must be inspected and evaluated by a Protan Technical Services Manager.
Features:
- Suitable for new-build and refurbishment applications on flat or pitched roofs.
- Protan SE membrane is manufactured from pliable PVC reinforced with knitted polyester. The PVC contains stabilizers that provide fire resistance, make the product UV-stable and resistant to high and low temperatures. The membrane remains flexible at low temperatures, during installation and use.
- Protan SE membrane has a unique anti-slip surface texture, which provides a significant safety factor when walked upon in wet weather.
Durability:
- Accelerated weathering tests and performance in service indicate that Protan SE membrane should have a life in excess of 30 years.
- A 1.6 mm-thick membrane may have an even longer life expectancy.
- The use of lighter colours helps to reduce surface temperature and may thus improve the membrane's ageing performance.
Fire Resistance:
- When tested in accordance with BS 476-3, a system comprising 0.7 mm profiled steel decking, 50 mm foil-faced polyurethane insulation and one layer of Protan SE 1.2 mm membrane (mechanically-fixed) achieved an EXT.F.AA rating (the highest possible classification).
- A 0.7 mm-thick profiled steel sloped deck, 0.21 mm-thick Air Vapour Control Layer, 90 mm-thick layer of foil-faced polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation and one layer of Protan SE 1.2 mm membrane mechanically-fixed with telescopic tube washers and fasteners achieved an EXT.S.AB rating.
- The use of Protan SE membrane with other non-combustible insulants would offer equal performance.
Performance:
- Tensile strength (EN12311-2): >1,050N / 50 mm.
- Elongation at break (EN12311-2): >15%.
- Tear strength (EN13210-2): 210N.
Substrates:
- Concrete.
- Other substrates will be assessed on a project-specific basis by Protan's Technical Services Department.

Environment:
The system is fully recyclable; there is no contamination because no adhesives or solvents are used during installation. Additionally, the system can be thermally upgraded with ease, as fixings are only used around the perimeter and penetrations.
Durability:
Accelerated weathering tests and performance in service confirm that satisfactory retention of physical properties is achieved. All available evidence indicates that Protan SE membranes should have a life in excess of 30 years. Refer to BBA certificate No 98/3459.
Technical approval:
Further information about the Protan Vacuum roof system can be found in the NBI Technical Approval No 2281.
Maintenance and inspection:
In accordance with BS 6229, Protan recommends that the roof be inspected in spring and autumn for cleaning of gutters; ensuring outlets are clear and free-flowing and without evidence of damage. Special attention should be paid to the Protan Vacuum Vents.
Approvals:
British Board of Agrement - Standard/ Certificate: 98/3459
